Mike Otto Construction Begins "Minnesota GreenStar" Remodeling Project

For Immediate Release

The state’s first official green certification pilot program for remodeling and construction is underway

MIKE OTTO CONSTRUCTION BEGINS “MINNESOTA GREENSTAR” REMODELING PROJECT JUNE 13 IN SOUTH MINNEAPOLIS HOME; COMPANY CHOSEN FOR ALREADY HAVING MANY BEST PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING IN PLACE

TWIN CITIES – June 13, 2007 – Mike Otto Construction (MOC, www.moconstruction.com) is showing homeowners that it’s easy to be green, even when they remodel their homes. MOC was chosen as one of the Twin Cities’s leading remodeling companies to participate in a new green certification pilot program called “Minnesota GreenStar Certified Green Homes and Remodeling” (www.mngreenremodeling.com). MOC specializes in older homes, and is already putting the principles of sustainable building and remodeling into place at a South Minneapolis home near Cedar Lake, one day after the training workshop to launch the Minnesota GreenStar program on June 12. Now people wanting to remodel their homes in an environmentally and energy-efficient manner will have a certification program -- and providers like MOC – to help them get it done.

MOC is one of 20 outstanding area builders in the Minnesota GreenStar pilot program but among the first to put the program into action -- and one of the few construction only companies to qualify for the project, sponsored by The Green Institute, NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry of Minnesota), BATC (Builders Association of the Twin Cities) and many other organizations, including the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

“MOC was part of our earlier Beta program because the company had many Best Practices in place before we even ventured into the Minnesota GreenStar pilot,” notes Christine Schwichtenberg, program coordinator for green building at the Green Institute. “The company also is focused only on construction and remodeling as opposed to the design-build companies in the pilot. We wanted someone like Mike Otto because he’s able to work with architects and others to affect change within the industry; he’s one of area’s ‘influencers’ given his history of doing many sustainable practices already.”

“Doing green remodeling is simply a good business practice that benefits everyone and the environment,” say Mike Otto, principal of MOC, “and contrary to common misperceptions, it doesn’t necessarily add costs to a home remodeling project.” Otto says that operating a good waste management program that minimizes dumpster loads for the landfills to recycling torn out building materials at a re-use center are just some of things MOC does on its jobsites. “We always try to use FCC-certified lumber, which is harvested from sustainable forests, tests for radon and Blower Door testing to determine where there might be energy leaks, and other things.” Otto should know.

For many years his company has done the following steps and more in its remodeling projects, with dependable quality and empathetic service for a Best-in-Class remodeling result:

  • Built to last, using only materials and fixtures tested for quality and durability
  • Adherence to latest building technology and codes by incorporating best-in-class capabilities and industry-standard components
  • Child-friendly construction for safety and wellness
  • 100 percent inspection approval ratings from city authorities
  • Environmentally conscientious about natural resources, recycling and reuse
  • Satisfaction guaranteed by MOC’s 10-Year Limited Warranty Policy
  • Problems resolved quickly through detail-oriented communication and intensive coordination to make each client’s renovation hassle-free
  • Empathetic relationships underscored by MOC’s concern about clients’ homes, safety, and dust and debris issues, with minimal disruptions to family life

About the Minnesota GreenStar Pilot Program

The Standards are based on guidelines that emphasize a whole-systems approach to remodeling and provide details on how to achieve these goals by applying the five key concepts of Green Remodeling to the eight components of the traditional building process.

The key concepts of Green Remodeling are:

  • Energy Efficiency

  • Resource Efficiency (including Durability)

  • Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Water Conservation

  • Site Management and Use

The eight components of the traditional building process are:

  • Outdoor and Site

  • Building Envelope and Systems

  • Mechanicals

  • Electrical and Lighting

  • Plumbing Systems and Fixtures

  • Finish Materials and Coatings

  • Waste Management

  • Education

The unique strength of this remodeling program is in the system of project verification and certification. A project that is registered with the program and is shown to meet its requirements through verification during design and construction will be certified as a Minnesota Green Homes Remodel. In addition to the benefits listed  above, certified projects may qualify for: Mortgage and home loan discounts Rebates on building materials and products Tax credits Preferred homeowner and health insurance rates Preferred utility rates

 About MOC

In the trusted hands of Mike Otto Construction (MOC), a new addition, upgraded kitchen, bath, second story, or even whole-home remodel gets the kind of old-world care and class that first went into constructing most of the homes in the area that were built in the early to middle part of the last century. Many companies in the Twin Cities can meet today’s remodeling needs for such housing stock. But MOC has a growing reputation for meeting those needs by exceeding homeowners’ expectations, whether, for example, improving the quality and lifestyle of south Minneapolis homes built in the 1920s or restoring and elevating the grandeur of a classic Victorian mansion in Champlin built in 1887  (see case studies).

Founded in 1992 by Mike Otto after years of learning and doing trimming, cabinetmaking, masonry, framing, finishing and the other fine points of home construction, MOC has created a successful collaborative model for home-remodeling construction. It has aligned itself with experienced and innovative architects and designers, reliable and certified subcontractors and its own building team, whose members share more than 45 years of collective experience in home remodeling.
